Arrieta's run would seem to end any remaining ambiguity about who would start in a wild card playoff game.

Of course, assuming it's against the Pirates, Maddon may figure that if he can't start Arrieta twice against the Cardinals, we'd be up against it, so gamble with Lester, then have Arrieta twice and Lester once against the Cards.  It'll be interesting.  Yes, we have to get to the Cards first.  Understood.

choosing who you want to pitch in a 1-game playoff assumes you have that luxury.  Having a 7 game lead helps make that more plausible.

I'm guessing this is me.  I don't remember writing that it is impossible, just that you are more likely to find an ace in the first round and elsewhere it is rare.
From 2010-2015 fWAR pitching leaders.  12/20 1st round picks, 2/20 second round picks, 3/20 IFA, 3/20 drafted after the 2rd round.  This year 5/20 have been drafted after the 2nd round, so I don't think it has changed.  It can happen, but it is rare.

If I counted right and the don't skip any starters on the 2 off dates, Arrieta's normal day to pitch would be Ocober 7th.

I have very pleasantly surprised with Baez's first week.  I've been something of a skeptic, and obviously 16 AB doesn't prove much. 

But the small sample has been encouraging.  He doesn't look overmatched at the plate early on, and he looks professional.  He looks like he's ready for the majors.
