I'm always curious why this logic doesn't hold up on the other end: "We finished first with you, we can finish first without you."  The Cubs are going to win the second wild card spot by about 10 games.  It's unlikely that Rizzo made a 10 game difference in the standings this year by himself--one player just isn't that valuable on a baseball team.  So if you're going to follow this logic, you need to remove players from all teams that ran away with their playoff spots too.

So in that case, players from the Cubs, Dodgers, and Mets are ineligible.  That means the MVP is McCutchen--without him, the Pirates would likely be in line for the second wild card spot.  Or maybe it's Jason Heyward--his fWAR (3.9) is basically identical to the current difference between the Cardinals and Pirates (4 games in the loss column).

Since there's no one official definition of what the MVP is supposed to be, it's probably just as well that it will be decided by a whole bunch of voters who will approach it with their own definition of what it's supposed to be.  And it will be Harper.

Without Harper the Nats would be closer to the Phillies than the Mets.   He was their entire offense almost the whole year.

Hmmm...I tended to recall it had something to do with Calvin Griffith, so I went to Wikipedia.  Hysterical.  Consider the Atlanta Hawks owner and the guy with the Clippers.  How would this quote float today:

Agree.   Then let's give everyone with more than ten hits a blue ribbon.   But everyone gets at least a red ribbon so nobody feels bad and has their ego damaged.  And every team gets rings.  Big shiney ones.

There are enough awards already.  They need to just clarify the rules for the MVP.

A most outstanding player award would make the MVP so arbitrary and narrative-driven that it wouldn't mean anything anyway.

I was just going through MLB Trade Rumors and Gordo had a piece that the Cubs are estimating a 275,000 increase in fans this year and that could lead to an extra $20+ million in revenue.

When they started the MVP award, the purpose was to recognize not the best player in baseball, but the most valuable player for a particular team.  Many players have been overlooked by fans because they were doing the little things that are not obvious to fans, but were vital to a particular team.  The guy that got on base so that the home run hitter could drive them in.  The guy that consistently got the game winning hit.  The little shortstop that prevented runs from scoring.

Personally, I think that voters seldom voted for those guys anyway.  They would make it more equitable if they just made the Cy Young aware for the best pitcher (which they mostly have) and the other award (under any name) for the best position player.

But then, what would the talk radio and reporters have to talk about?
