Keep in mind that Bryant has caught 2 flyballs as a CFer in his career.

He is athletic, so can adapt on the field. But, Bryant in CF and Schwarber in LF covering 2/3 of the OF? Hard to feel good about that.

Before season, said that test for Bryant at 3B would be whether he could be solid average at 3B. Think he has reached that level. He is super valuable as a 3B at that level. Would leave well enough alone.

Well, let's test that.

Can you explain why you didn't want to trade Daury Torrez for David Price before the trade deadline? Do you have a different view now, in retrospect?

Many on the board, mid-season, were very, very skeptical that Cubs would be serious contenders for WS. Let's be real about that.

Again - most were NOT skeptical that the Cubs would be serious contenders for WS, but rather that the odds of that happening would not be increased enough by the acquisition of two months of ANYBODY to justify the probably cost.  What actually was said was that in order to make it, several of the young players on the team would have to play extremely well, and if that happened, Price wouldn't improve their chances by very much.

Agree that it's unlikely, but think his defensive skill set, which is at least solid average at 3B, *might* actually profile better in CF.

Although Bryant has very good speed for a six foot five slugger, I don't think he has the exceptional speed that is desirable in a center fielder.  I think that if he goes to the outfield, it will be as a corner outfielder, right field if Soler fails, or left field if Soler performs well.

Let's test that.  I would not trade a valuable future piece for Price.  That is under the assumption that the Cubs will not sign price either as a free agent or as a "home team discount".

The Cubs have at best a 6.25 percent chance to win the world series IF you assume that they are equal in talent to the other teams they will face.  Price MIGHT raise that to 10 percent.

No, I would not make that trade today.  Perhaps because I value Torrez more than you seem to.

Theo, every GM in the game, everyone else on this board, the entire Ricketts family, and Daury Torrez's mother would all make that trade, even if it was an absolute certainty Price would be nothing more than a rental and the Cubs would not resign him.

I had thought there was some confusion from you at the time and that you meant Gleyber Torres, but if you meant Daury Torrez, you may be the only one on the planet who values him that highly.

I am NOT ignorant.

It is not that I value Torrez so highly.  It is that I value a two month rental so little.

I have no doubt that every other GM in the country would make that trade.  I wouldn't.

Dave is serious about no Daury Torrez for David Price.  Has nothing to do with anybody's evaluation of Torrez as a prospect but rather an almost pathological mindset about deferring 2015 for future seasons.

Granted, possible it's just a weird stubborness mixed with a smidgen of temporary stupidity on this one matter, but losing mentality of some Cubs fans can affect us all in strange ways.

Consider this: is it possible 2015 is Cubs best shot at World Series winner if can get past wild card game? Future seasons may have unexpected setbacks, who knows. Following the Nats in recent seasons--the unexpected can happen. This 2015 club has jelled with Maddon magic. Maybe his act wears out in near future, who knows. And, 2015 club has been lucky good health compared to many other clubs. Baseball is unpredictable.

Dave can wait for Russell and Soler and Baez to get to majors in 2016 and Schwarber in 2017 and hold on to Daury Torrez forever, but I'm kind of having fun in 2015.

Be Here Now.

Granted, in the history of human endeavors, the occasional oddball rowing against the tide turns out to be the true visionary.

This is not one of those cases.

This is true.  I was reading an article a few days ago suggesting that it might be better for the Cubs if the one game playoff was played at PNC rather than Wrigley.  The premise was that, since the fan base carries so much baggage, Wrigley might turn deathly quiet should the Pirates get out to an early lead.

I assume - and fervently hope - that Maddon and the team would dismiss that as absolute nonsense.

You may think that 2015 will be the only chance the Cubs have to get to the world series.  I don't.  I would rather have a reasonable chance for a dynasty than a 6.5 percent chance to win the world series once.  Increasing the chances to 9.5 doesn't impress me very much.

But go ahead.  Play to the jury.

I appreciate your optimism, sir.

Not that this hypothetical was ever possible and not to belabor the idea of it any more...I just don't see Daury Torres contributing to any prospective dynasty versus a David Price (even as a rental)

Torrez has a low arm slot, so Arguella has speculated that he might make a nice reliever. I would certainly trade Torrez for 2 months of Price, but the cost for Price was significantly higher and would have hurt the Cubs future so it seems to not really matter all that much.

Tico since Boras is the agent for Bryant/Russell/Arrieta I don't think we have to worry about signing them to extensions. It might be possible for Schwarber and Baez, but I don't think they would be that much higher than Rizzo or Castro to do. Soler would be pretty expensive, just because of how his contract is set up.
