1.  He was at Tampa for what, 9 years?  And seemed to sustain pretty well there.

I think a factor may also be the character of some of the lead players may be conducive to sustained success.  Rizzo, Arrieta, Lester, Russell, Bryant, Schwarber, there seems to be a core of guys who seem to be pretty self-motivated.  Not sure they totally need a domineering dictator manager to keep them motivated.  Maddon's not a big rules-guy; success and no-rules can be a problem for some guys, but there are indications that the Cubs could have a pretty strong clubhouse, and may not all fall victim to wine-women-and-song even after they experience success, fame and fortune. 

Good post, craig. Very much agree. Think most of what Joe does and says is just Joe (I'm sure some is contrived, but suspect not all that much).  Also think the front office emphasis on "character" is a factor as well.  And as much as people complain about Ross taking up a spot, I keep seeing/hearing people within or close to the team talk about how important he has been to this season. May not make much sense to us, but that doesn't really matter does it?

Maddon is a really good manager: flexible, intelligent, understands personalities, and cogent and smart with the media and fans. Think he really understands team psychology---sends messages effectively to players by what he says to media. Very cognizant that it's a 162 game season. Almost always watch portions of his post-games with media and he's uniformly impressive.

Just saying that, over time, long managerial tenures are the exceptions. Referenced his "act" in previous post with quotations to use as term of art---not to imply he's a phony or anything. Maddon has a very distinct schtick---as far away from a generic type manager imaginable. Heard that a few thought this was wearing thinner in Tampa late---not coincidentally during a less than stellar season. Unlikely to happen here, but there are always rumblings when a disappointing season comes.

Think Maddon is important part of the turnaround here. Lucky to have him.

Reb - Surely you aren't suggesting that Cub fans might turn on Maddon if things don't go well.  We all know that would not happen.

Several writers on Twitter are saying that Maddon told them he hasn't ruled out bullpen days during the playoffs. I think that's the way to go on non-Arrieta/Lester days.  Maybe not necessarily bullpen days...but just decide from day-to-day who matches up best out of Hammel, Hendricks, Wood, Cahill, and Richard.  Don't set the rotation beyond Arrieta and Lester.

Not much difference these days between a Hammel or Hendricks start vs a "bullpen day" if you ask me.

I don't know, bullpen days seem to have been pretty good compared to Hammel and Hendricks lately.

Cubs are now 89-62, 27 games over .500, on pace to win 96 games (rounding the decimal places).  Simply mind-boggling.
