That has to be the Sporting News NL Rookie of the Year.  The MLB award is not announced until after the World Series.  He'll win that one too but not yet.

Some of us remember when The Sporting News was known as "The Baseball Bible".  A writer from the city of each MLB team contributed.  You could even see the box scores of all the games from the previous week.

Pre-Baseball America, Sporting News was only source for minor league news. Thick with baseball news and columns. Essential for the day.

I would sometimes go along with Mom to the store.  Why did I have to stand in line?  I could just go over to the newspaper/magazine area and look in the Sporting News to see which Cub guys were in the minor league leaders.

One of my Dad's coworkers would give me his Sporting News after he read them. I loved that magazine as a kid. at some point they moved from the more news oriented magazine to something more like Sports Illustrated and it made me sad. It is just amazing to think how the Internet and things like Sports Center have changed how we get the news.

In 1965 I was stationed in Glasgow AFB in northeast Montana.  Straight out of Chicago, I was living in a three county area that had fewer people than the suburb of Evergreen Park.  I went into the only drugstore in town and came across the St Louis Sporting News, which carried some coverage of both the major and minor leagues.  For the first 6 months, the Tribune mailed me a free copy of the daily paper so I had news of the MLB club, but the Sporting News had news of their minor league teams.

Thus began a lifelong obsession with the Cubs minor league system.

It came out once a week.  I believe it was dated Tuesdays, but it reached the stand on Wednesdays.  They only got three copies, and I soon found out that if I didn't get there in the morning, they would all be gone.

I loved the Sporting News in tabloid form.  As a boy, I remember going to the store in the spring to get their forecast edition along with Street and Smith's Baseball spring issue, analyzing every team and nearly every player that might come up and have an impact.  Rarely did we know of an up and coming star on another team without that kind of input.  Street and Smith's is still around, but I haven't bought one in years because they too changed their format in such a way that I find the internet more enjoyable.

Of all the magazines I had subscriptions to when I was a kid (Baseball Digest, SI, Sport), Sporting News was always my favorite, due to the detail...truth be known, I probably have a few boxes of old issues up in my attic right now...

The Sporting News was based in St. Louis and printed 50 issues per year.  I remember being disappointed when it didn't come for a couple weeks at Christmas.

I was walking by a newsstand a couple days ago with my youngest son and was telling him how excited I used to get when waiting for the preseason mags to come out.  College football and basketball were my thing.  Street and Smith was the bible. 

I used to subscribe to Sport and Inside Sports as well as Sports Illustrated, Baseball Digest and Football Digest.  My mom didn't like the Sporting News because the ink ran and made the table dirty.
