From PSD Hoyer last week on ESPN 1000;

"I mean Javy Baez might be one of our better outfielders. He's phenomenal out there and will probably give him some reps out there as well."

Hoyer also said KB will continue to take reps in the OF and Russell will probably still get some reps at 2B as well.

#Mariners add Joe Bohringer as a special assistant to the GM. He spent last four years as the Cubs' director of pro scouting.

He was demoted when Parker came over from the Red Sox, supposed to be pretty well thought of.

With Anthopoulus leaving the Blue Jays it would be nice to poach some of their international scouting guys.  They always seem to find a bunch of pitchers or bring in AA as a special assistant to the GM.

The other day I spotted a feature about the 20 pitchers who made the most money in baseball.  #20 was Zambrano.  #1 was Randy Johnson, followed closely by Mariano Rivera.   Of course, Clemens, Maddux, Sabathia were in the top 10, and some of the bottom guys were guys who didn't make it to the big money before they retired.  It was some of the guys in the middle that caught my attention: Mike Hampton, Santana, Zito, Kevin Brown and a few others who hit the skids after signing big contracts.   I hope we don't spend outrageous money on Price, that's all I'm saying.  It often works out poorly.

I think that the Cubs are ready to seriously compete for a World Championship now, and that the risk of spending a fortune on Price is mitigated by this.  If he's healthy for the next few seasons, he could be decisive in winning a championship.  Perhaps there can be contract terms that limit the risk in the out years.

Bottom line is that the Cubs need to acquire a #1/2 type starter, and I would prefer they do that by spending money rather than by dealing a lot of young talent.

Not sure.  I would hope we can extend him before he has to have that kind of money.  But, if he wanted the same kind of money as they're throwing around about Price, yes, I feel the same.

Arrieta is likely going to be closer to Lester in price for the out years if they can extend him now.  If he has 2 more dominant years the $$ will be more than Price.

Any free agent, hitter or pitcher, has the ability to be a bad contract.  Hamilton, Fielder and Pujols have all under performed their contracts

Most of the bad contracts in the past have been bad more because of their length.  Signing a 30 year old pitcher for three years is more likely to produce good total value than signing the same pitcher for seven years.

It is almost as if the pitcher is likely to be more valuable per year in the first three years than in the second four years.

If David Price goes to hell in year 3 of a 6 year deal but helps us win a WS in year 2 was it worth it?

I think yes.

As far as Arrieta goes dont we have him under control for 2 more years?

Let him prove he's worth ace money.

I see no need to rush to extend him.

Who was it here who was predicting that Baez was likely to get meaningful playing time in the OF next year?

Im not one who hated Jim Hendry.

He's still to this day the most succesful GM of my time as a fan.
