Cubs manager David Ross says Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant will be available off the bench today at Wrigley Field. Rizzo gets his first day off since the All-Star break and Bryant is coming off a recent hamstring issue. Ross ends his pregame media session: “Stay off Twitter.”

Maples was drafted in 2011 and made his MLB debut in 2017. He's almost 30 years old. At some point, they're going to realize that he doesn't have enough command to be a successful major league pitcher.

Like the Cubs are going to be competing for anything anytime soon so what is the harm in keeping him around.  He struggled and got out of it with 1 run.

If you keep him, you need to use him.

So you can see the foot and a half outside slider that Baez swung at, and missed, striking out leaving COntreras stranded at second.  Votto with a 2 run homer in top first — why pitch to him?  2 - 0 Reds, top second.

Castillo either stared him down, or had some words, or both...

If Bote is a step or two deeper at 2B, he probably makes both of those plays...

Think Hoerner makes them both...

1 - 2 - 3 double play to end the inning.  Cool.  But Cubs down by 1 bottom 6.

Cubs in bottom half with Happ up and Baez on first, full count, and an easy strike em out throw em out double play.  Ridiculous.

The Cubs need to cut Heyward, because Ross is clearly unable to keep him on the bench. Kris Bryant could have gotten a standing ovulation in what will likely be his last AB as a Cub in Wrigley because Heyward was sent to the plate and Ross was managing to “win.”  This team is so hard to like at times.

In Ross' postgame presser, one of the reporters asked, "Is everybody flying to Washington?".

Ross replied, "Everybody is flying to Washington...as far as I know."  A pause, followed by "That's a tough question to ask me."

It reminded me of the latter part of Lasorda's response when he was asked for his opinion of Kingman's performance.

Nats and Cubs series starting Friday night will be like two tornado victims climbing out of the rubble looking for a light above.
