Brown's success does not look like a fluke.

Watching the highlights, that change Brown threw to K Gorman (his final pitch) was absolutely filthy. In fact he threw 4 straight changeups that AB and also struck out Gorman on a change earlier. If he could do that consistently, the sky's the limit.

Also, PCA's catch in the 9th was absolutely bonkers.

With Wicks going today, nice to have won yesterday and make sure they don't get swept.  Cubs have tomorrow off, Cardinals don't.  So, Counsell could afford to go fairly quickly to the bullpen.  Guessing Counsell will probably not let Wicks allow more than two HR!  But baseball is a funny game, so maybe Wicks will have a hot game and be antiawful for a day?  Would be fun if he could, been a long time since winning a series.

wicks finishes with only 3 runs in his two innings, improves ERA to 15.6.  Roberts comes in and allows some more, so down 5-0 after 3.

Awful defense by the Cubs. Swanson olays a grounder, then Happ pulls up on a popup that should've been caught.

Cubs 0-5 w/ RISP, Bregman with a K and weak roller for two of those outs.

If Wicks never throws another pitch for the Cubs it will be too soon.

Nice night for Taillon, wind blowing in, so he's gotten into the 5th inning with only 1 HR thus far.  With wind in, his best game in a long time, only 2 runs, 1 walk, and 1 HR through 5.

Bregman has some great attitudes and desire to win, of which we heard prolifically off season.  But man, he's been about as anti-clutch as I can remember.  Would like to see him get some RBI hits for a change, or maybe just advance all baserunners.  Poor guy has been kind of a rally killer.

A lot of attention when a batter comes up with 2 outs and RISP.  Cubs have not been good at that lately, obviously.

But, a lot of poor performance with 0 outs and RISP. For me, that's the key AB. The guy comes up with runners on base and does nothing with 0 outs. That’s how you have productive multi-run innings—by getting a hit there. Not much of that.

First inning tonight, Bregman up with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Got a run in with a routine grounder but did not advance the runner from 2nd and created an out. Meh.

So much soft contact tonight. Cubs hitless from one out in second inning all the way to the 9th inning. Hardest hit ball all night was a kind of routine PCA flyout in 3rd inning. A’s SP Jump with just 5 swing-and-misses thru 7 innings (Taillon had 18). Soft flyball contact and lots of called strikes. Boo.

When your starting pitcher only throws two or three good games a season and you blow one of them, that hurts.
