Shortstop Jose Reyes and left-hander Mark Buehrle, two of the five Marlins headed to Toronto in a pending blockbuster, are upset that the team broke verbal promises to them regarding trades, according to major-league sources.

The Marlins do not award no-trade clauses, but club officials, while recruiting Reyes and Buerhle as free agents last offseason, assured both players that they would not be moved, sources said.

Buehrle knew the Marlins’ history of dumping high-priced players, and it concerned him, according to a friend. Team president David Samson, however, told both Buehrle and his wife, Jamie, that the team was committed to a long-term vision, sources said.

Contractual promises which someone refuses to put into writing to make them enforceable tend to be rather worthless promises.

There is a hilarious twitter persona who goes by the name "Old Hoss Radbourn." He is an old-timey baseball guy who offers opinions on everything. Regarding what JesBeard posted, he wrote:

Even if an attorney had recorded the promises on paper, because that contract term could not be carried out in one year, in most states, it would not be given any effect by a court unless it was a signed agreement.

The Diamondbacks are looking at Jeff Keppinger for their 3B spot next year.  He might not be a bad guy for the Cubs to consider at 3B as well.

Jeremy Guthrie signs with the Royals for 3 years.  No terms yet, but it'll be interesting to see how much he gets...I believe he's the first starting pitcher to sign a major multi-year deal.

Apparently, it's $25 million for Guthrie--$5 million in 2013, $11 million in 2014, and $9 million in 2015.

So it's backloaded too.  Yep, they're going to regret that one. 

You'd think in the year 2012, teams would be smart enough not to get too caught up in a player having a flukey half season with them and thinking they're going to keep it up for another 3-4 years.  The only time Guthrie has been a decidedly above average pitcher in the last four seasons was his half of a season in Kansas City.  He was terrible in Colorado before being traded over there.  Plus he's also on the wrong side of 30. 

Same old Kansas City.  They hardly spend money, and when they do, they spend it foolishly.

I also thought I had heard that the Royals didn't have much money to spend this offseason.  But that must not be true if they can spend all this money on Guthrie and Ervin Santana.
