I think Edgar Martinez settled that issue.

Edgar is illustrative but not in a way that flatters Schwarber. He had 68+ WAR and a .933 career OPS. He also played 564 games at 3B and statistically at least wasn't terrible there. If he's the standard by which a DH can get into the HoF, it doesn't bode well for Schwarbs.

I love Kyle and I hope he does get in. But he needs a minimum 550 homers to be a serious candidate, and 600 to seal the deal.

Unless can come up with a Schwarber comp with somebody already in the HOF, it’s just spitballin.

Thirty years ago, the 500 HRs-and-you’re-in discussion was about Dave Kingman. He came off a 35 HR season that got him to 442 HRs and folks were seriously concerned about how to deal with that. Of course no way on the planet was Dave Kingman going to be in the HOF, 500 homers or not.

Fortunately, nobody wanted Kingman even after a 35 homer season, so that discussion went away.

Schwarber is, if course, way better than Kingman on many levels, including in the clubhouse, but you need more than 500 homers when so many other HOF indicia are subpar. That’s the point.

Love the guy but think that that Schwarber will have to exceed 500 by a very significant margin to get in, seems to me. Otherwise, show me a comp.

Edgar was mentioned because he was omitted for some time because he was a DH.  Nothing to do with WAR or number of homers.

Phillies get a pinch-hit grand slam with 2 out in the 9th to beat Anaheim. Cubs lead in the WC is dissolving.

I'd rather face the Phillies in Wrigley than in Philly.

Ohtani is 6 for his last 40 (.150) with 3 extra-base hits and 2 RBI.

His OPS has dropped 35 points since leaving Wrigley on August 5th.

His return to the mound tomorrow has been scratched.
