You said that accepting the offer was “not by choice.”  Now you say “he couldn’t refuse.”  Sounds the same to me.

Let us agree that Buckner and some other senior umps simply accepted attractive offers that made rational sense for them to accept. Sometimes happens in the workplace. Some folks decline to accept and some decide to accept. This is not Don Vito Corleone making an offer you can’t refuse. MLB was pleased they accepted. They made an offer and presumably hoped that it would be accepted.

Not a matter of “not by choice” or “couldn’t refuse.”  An offer and an acceptance. No drama. No nothing.

It’s a simple point. He had a choice. He could have said No.

Whether it made “no sense” to refuse, you don’t know that. Why do you say that? Based on what?

Maybe it was a tough choice for him. Who knows. For a lot of folks, when to retire is not obvious or “easy.” You don’t know the details. He accepted, as did other umpires. That’s what we know. Everybody who accepted probably weighed somewhat different factors

The point is that be had a choice. You initially said “not by choice.” If you don’t believe that anymore, you’re on the right track.
