Brewers have 5 1/2 games lead on the Braves for a first-round bye. Closing in on Dodgers, 1 1/2 back.

Cubs have a better record than every AL team, except for the Rays.

$367M payroll Mets trying to hold off Rockies for worst NL record, 1 game up over Rockies.

29 teams don't have Hoyer running their club.  The explanation for why the Brewers have been so successful probably lies elsewhere.

Justin Verlander has announced he’s retiring at the end of the season.

Too bad he and Scherzer didn’t retire at the end of last year. Along with Kershaw, that would’ve set up an all-time great HOF class.

Pete Fairbanks was a name often suggested for Cubs bullpen this winter.  He got his 13th save tonight... while carrying a 6.75 ERA!  Crazy.

That’s really not very good. 22% miss rate on all called strikes. If only about 20% (according to Google) of pitches are “borderline”, the miss rate on these has to be well north of half (so not as good as a random call generator). Bearing in mind that a lot more could be overturned because teams either couldn’t challenge (all used) or were saving their challenges for a better moment. (Google also says that 92% of strikes are called accurately, though.)

Kyle Schwarber should have never been pushed out of Chicago.  He will always be my favorite Cub until he retires.

Patrick Flowers of Bleacher Nation is usually quite good.  He's my favorite of the Bears writers on that site.

But I stumbled upon this gem of his, writing about tonight's MLB All-Star Game:

The 96th Midsummer Classic will mark the first-ever All-Star starting-pitcher matchup between a Phillie and a Blue Jay, and a rematch of last October’s World Series, which Toronto won over the Dodgers.

Patrick, every ASG is a rematch of the previous year's World Series.  Oh, and Toronto didn't win.  Minor detail.
