No, he doesn't need to go through waivers, but to be claimed. He must be a Major Leaguer.  Dave, you jumped the gun on this.  In effect, you have added a minor leaguer which is not legal.  Take another pitcher until Giolito gets back up to the Padres.

How Fantrax works.

If a player is on the IL I have to go in and edit to put the player on waivers.  I typically only do this for guys that are worth being claimed and it is pretty rare for guys to not get drafted and be worth picking up.  It becomes a pain because I typically have to edit their waiver period multiple times.

In Giolioto's case it didn't work because you jumped the gun.  We would have to have a paid league to remove players from the player pool that aren't on major league teams.  Those are all the guys with the blue flags and 99% of the time they aren't worth doing anything about because they aren't coming back.  In Giolito's case once he gets assigned to the minor leagues he would have gone from a blue to green flag and that would have removed him from the player pool.  Once he gets called up then he would be added back into the pool and would have to go throguh waivers and he'd get an organge button. 

I didn't do anything with Giolito because he isn't great and didn't think someone would add him.

I think br's point, which I agree with, is that Giolito needed to be available to everyone on waivers first before he could be signed as an FA.

I considered that, but we have always treated veterans in the pool differently.  Undrafted, they were the chaff in the pool.  Waivers were for veterans dropped by other owners and raw rookies who were not in someone's minors.  Giolito could have been drafted, if someone wished to take the chance.  He wasn't.  It's fuzzy.

Players that weren't signed had to go through waivers in the past.  I had to claim Arrieta when he signed late with Phillies.

You did?  Commissioner must have been a dick.  Probably need a statement in the rules as to who must go through waivers more clearly.
