Hour long interview with Hoyer.  He seems to be feeling pretty comfortable and confident.  Not all that many questions about the actual 2026 team, really.  No hint from that interview that he's still serious about Gallen or anything like that.  He kinda sounded variably done.  Also zero hint that any actual Hoerner-trade consideration.  Interestingly, he seemed to kinda think that Hoerner has gotten better as a hitter as the season progressed, hitting the ball harder and more pull-in-air.  I think that's true.  (How about training Alcantara and Moises a little bit of that, hey??)

View that Shota's mechanics got disrupted, and his fastball didn't have the sail or deception.  He admitted that with the Cubs contract situation, that he feels really flexible in terms of whatever modifications there will be in next CBA.

Hoerner is a better hitter when he’s not focused on pull-in-air, IMO…

Beats me.  I think he's best when he uses *all* fields, including the pull side.  Sometimes whacking an inside pitch or an inside breaking ball down the 3B line is a nice double for him, rather than trying to push an inside pitch into right.  And given how far into right-center that center fielders play him, there is usually a lot of open space in left and left-center.  Think he can kinda hit them anywhere and everywhere, go with the pitch.

Let Nico be Nico. Let Moises be Moises. If they ain't broke don't fix 'em.

Ultimately, the goal is to build a team good enough to capture a division title, secure a first-round bye and win the World Series.

"The Cubs aren’t done with their offseason", article headline.  Mooney article.

Mentions a variety of pitchers, Gallen and beyond.  Lucas Giolito (No. 30), Chris Bassitt (No. 31), Zack Littell (No. 37), Max Scherzer (No. 41), Walker Buehler, Jordan Montgomery, Aaron Civale, Nick Martinez, Justin Verlander range.

Personally, unless or until they already know we've got some injuries, I'm not sure I see the point in spending on guys like this beyond Gallen?

Gallen, yes.  Maybe if they really think Giolito is ready to break out, I guess.
-Maybe if they get to camp, and find out that somebody's arm isn't right, I change my mind?  (Last year, Birdsell and Assad were long-term injured before the first exhibition game, so maybe if that's Taillon or Harvey or Palencia, different story.)

*IF* Buehler or Montgomery or Civale or Martinez want to sign minor-league deals in which they really can get sent to Iowa after camp, yes, I love that.  But you can only have 13 pitchers on the roster.  *IF* you sign somebody from Gallen, Giolito, Bassitt, or Littell, they're on the roster.

I'm arguing with myself.  *IF* you add a pitcher, he replaces Assad.  Maybe that's strategic?  Send Assad, Brown, Hodge, Wiggins, Wicks, Little, and Neely to Iowa as nice option-able contingencies.  .

Makes baseball sense to me to replace Assad with Gallen.  Yes, Assad may just be as good or better a pitcher; but also possible that Gallen might just be better, perhaps significantly so.   If Jed were to sign Giolito or Bassitt or Littell, the same reasoning would need to apply.  Are those guys even as good or better than 3.45-career-ERA Assad, or with the Cubs defense and Wrigley will they actually be definitely better?  Even if replacing Assad is a lateral move or a downgrade, does adding an Assad-quality guy available at Iowa make it more than worth it?

Scherzer, Nick Martinez, Aaron Civale, I kinda by then it's a no-brainer.  Those guys are worse, and you're downgrading the big-league staff too much to replace Assad with one of them.

With the current roster, if healthy we've got 13 pitchers.  Ten guaranteed big-league contracts and can't be optioned, only 3 or 4 have options:  Horton, Palencia, and Assad.  (Maybe Cabrera).  Either way, Horton, Palencia, or Cabrera aren't guys you want to send down to make room for Nick Martinez or Max Scherzer.

So pretty much Assad is the top-13 pitcher that you might option.  *IF* you want to sign an additional pitcher, it's to displace Assad on your preferred opening roster.

I'm in the camp of signing Valdez and then shipping someone like Taillon or Boyd off for young talent to fill the system.  A rotation of Valdez, Horton, Boyd (or Taillon), Imanaga, and Cabrera would be formidable, perhaps tops in the league.  We don't need more #3's or 4's.  Not to mention Steele's return.

You might get a prospect for Boyd but no way Taillon has surplus value. At best you’d get somebody to take him without having to attach a prospect yourself.

Free agent OF Austin Hays is said to be deciding this weekend where he will sign. Teams that have offered and/or expressed interes are the Reds, Rangers, White Sox, Tigers, Cardinals, Padres and Cubs.

Two thoughts:  1.  If offers were equal, probably smarter to sign with Sox.  Get lots of AB, chance to rebuild his market for his next contract; and if he has a good season, he'll probably get traded to a contending team anyway, one which has some need for him so he'll get some ABs.
2.  But kinda thinking that *IF* Cubs made the same offer, he'd have maybe taken the offer from the winning team, not the losing team?  Most players like winning teams.
3.  *IF* he chose Sox over Cubs, it probably reflects something about how much Jed is willing to spend for a backup OF.

It's too bad there are no links to the Cubs and Valdez. I mean, if they're legit considering Gallen they're prepared to go past the tax line anyway and Valdez is the guy who actually moves the needle. Maybe they really think he's toxic.

For Cubs and Valdez, guessing that the reluctance is contract length——not AAV/CBT.

Hoyer has shown aversion to players with character flaws since Milton Bradley, Chapman, and Russell caused some negativity.  I think Valdez's incident with his catcher has cost him ooddles of cash.  Reports are his agent is sending out packages portraying his popularity with teammates rather than his stats and accomplishments.  It doesn't take much to become a pariah like Bauer.

We don't know to what extend Valdez is an issue behind the scenes. What we do know is nowhere near what we know with Bauer.

Presumably Bregman could give Jed as much insight about that as he could possibly want. That might be telling in its own right.
