If Cubs median over the next 6 years at 6th in payroll, I will be satisfied. If it's 11th, as it was this year, I will be dissasfied. If they spend $265 this year, I will be satisfied, happy, and optimistic. If they spend sub-lux this year, after a winning season, after 5 home playoff games, and after almost signing Bregman last year, I will be dissatisfied.
If they median at 6th in payroll over upcoming years, but the team still doesn't win a lot of games and doesn't have a lot of success within the division, I will not blame Ricketts, I will blame Hoyer. A $265-270 payroll is enough resource to build a winning team if you're a good boss. And a $265-270 payroll when others in division are <$160 is a huge advantage. If you can't do really well relative to the division with a $265 vs $160 payroll, blame Hoyer, not his budget.
If payroll is $235, sub-lux, but they still win >90 games, but get knocked out in postseason, I will not blame Hoyer, I will blame Ricketts.
