I certainly value the role of law enforcement and sympathize with the predicament that individual good actors face in this moment. But let's be honest:
ICE is deploying thousands of individuals over and against MN state wishes and intentionally fomenting chaos and fear.
They are doing so by flooding the zone with new recruits, many of whom do not pass background checks, fitness requirements, open book exams, etc. They are appealing to these new recruits with actual Nazi propaganda (images, symbology, language, etc.) via social media, and then rushing these unqualified individuals into extremely delicate and explosive contexts, armed to the teeth and given the promise of absolute immunity.
Anyone with any experience in law enforcement or the armed services can see plainly that so many ICE agents are behaving recklessly at best, antagonistically at worst, and with deadly force. So much so that shootings and killings to date in Minneapolis are overwhelmingly driven by ICE agents. Neighborhoods are being teargassed. Schools are shutting down. Flashbangs thrown into the vehicles of citizens simply trying to move out of harm's way, the harm caused by ICE agents in otherwise peaceful neighborhoods.
The administration has been caught in lie after lie after lie about these altercations, the circumstances that preceded them, and how they are handled after the fact. The "we're just after the bad guys" is clearly a ruse as they round up children, pregnant women, and hard working individuals left and right. Including many US citizens. Virtually all of whom are disappeared by masked men into unmarked cars after being subjected to entirely unconstitutional "papers please" inquiries. Those inquires are usually without proper cause, racially motivated, and in violation of multiple constitutional rights. People without any criminal history, some of whom are in the US legally, are being sent to foreign black sites for torture.
Immigration is a complex issue. The Biden administration failed spectacularly at it. We need secure borders and a controlled means of vetting and admitting people that want to come to this country. Nothing about the current operation advances any of those goals. And it's shocking to see the conservative movement, which, for as long as I've been alive, has been concerned with limited government, responsible budgets and use of force, states rights, individual liberties, free speech, etc., throw their support behind such inhumane, brutal, and catastrophically overreaching "enforcement."
We're repeating the sins of the Japanese internment camps. And there's the potential for it to become much worse.
Good faith individuals can disagree on root causes and solutions. But it beggars belief that so many people in this country have become so ideologically warped that they cannot see the clear and present danger, and evil, of this moment.
