Taillon and Rea being essentially 5th starters makes it all the more critical that Cabrera doesn't pitch like one. Taillon and Rea are what they are, you aren't going to "fix" them. But Cabrera is another story. Is there a physical issue or is it mechanical or mental? His velocity is certainly down.

Don’t think velocity is really the story with Cabrera. Velocity was actually UP a bit this last outing from earlier. But, hit harder than you’d want.

Overall, sinker and 4-seam down a tick or so for the season but the sinker hardly getting any swing-and-miss. I wonder if he should put the sinker on ice—instead of throwing it 20% of the time. His bread and butter is change up and breaking stuff in any case. Said on the broadcast that Cubs working on getting his release point at higher angle, as in past.

Man oh man, Cubs have had a million opportunities in the the early innings against Fedde, but are only up 3-1 mid-3rd.  Fedde's at 84 pitches through 3, so they might not get more than one more inning of opportunity.  When you face a bad starter, you'd really like to get control of a game and blast him, and then get to face decidedly use-when-losing relievers.  But now they're going to mostly face good-stuff relievers for most of the remaining innings.  Opportunities wasted.  *IF* they end up losing, it will be these wasted first three innings of opportunity where nobody could get a hit with RISP that will have cost them.

Sox escape with only 4 runs given up by Fedde.  4-2 after four, Rea's at only 59 pitches, so Sox are going to get several more innings of opportunity against the vulnerable starter before the bullpen comes in.  4 runs will not win this game, Cubs need to score more!

Hoerner mis-played a DP ball.  A little slow to catch and throw.  And gave a really soft slow-toss, thinking Murakami wasn't as fast as he was.  Kinda should have been a dp, but Murakami beat it out by a flash.  The two typing runs scored when PCA missed a deep fly ball.  He had time to get there, and kinda slowed down some to time his jump.  But when he jumped, the ball wasn't beyond his glove, he just put his glove off to the side and missed it.  Rare to have two defensive opportunities to get out of the inning missed by our two best defenders.

Cubs had a zillion chances early, but Sox now going with their premium relievers.  Taylor is dominating. 

Cubs 1-8 with RISP, Sox 3-7, lots of 2-out RBI for them.

Cubs 1-10 RISP.  Some interesting stragegy in 8th.  Cubs get leadoff guys on, Shaw pinch running and PCA HBP, so lots of speed.  Try to bunt with Swanson, and he succeeds.  Questionable plan, because Sox could just walk Hoerner, and then have lefty-lefty on Busch with a ground-ball pitcher.  But Counsell does the bunt.  Then Hoerner gets a nice hittable pitch, but hits a shallow pop fly to left, good pitch to have lofted a ways.  Busch flies out.  Hoerner has been pretty good, but bummer failed opportunity there for him.  Getting an actual hit with a runner on might be helpful, too...  Oh well.

Doesn't.  Maton had 2 outs, nobody on, but then pitches around Benintendi and walks him easily.  Gives up another hit to guy hitting .157, and gives up HR to #9 hitter. 


Mighta been better to just go with Milner, and save 9.49-Maton for use-when-losing situations. 


Oh well, Cubs had their chances early, and had their chance with Hoerner, but blew them. 


2 outs has been tough.  Runners on, they can't hit with 2 outs.  Pitching, 2 outs hard time getting 3rd out. 


Of the 2-out runs allowed, Rea walked one of the guys who scored; Rea hit another runner who scored; Maton of course walked the first runner who scored in the 8th. 


Kind of a bummer when these finesse veteran pitchers are putting guys on base who end up scoring.  Taillon kinda set up his first HR yesterday with a walk as well. 


O well.

Kinda shocking that Hoyer's relief signings get worse each year.  As bad as Neris was, kinda shocking that Pressly was worse, but not Maton has been worse yet. 

Maybe next couple of years, don't sign any relievers from teams in Texas!  :):)
