Crazy error on Suzuki ball.  Off the bat, sharp groundball with slow Bregman and slow Seiya, I thought that might be a DP game over.  Lucky that Vargas threw to first, weird bouncer throw, and terrible play on Murakami's end.

Palencia uses 14 pitches in 9th.  I wonder if any chance he'd get used also for the 10th?  Haasn't pitched much lately, 1.2 innings in the last week, 2.0 innings in the last 12 days.

Yet another reason to hate that incredibly stupid rule, even if it helps us today.

Sox strategy works out well.  They did two intentional walks, to set up bases loaded for high-walk guys Bregman and Seiya.  I'd not have done that, but Bregman hits a super weak grounder, and Seiya whiffs.  Cubs get just the single run.  More wasted opportunity.  2-for-14 with RISP.  Conforto's HR was not with two outs, so I guess once we got to two outs, getting a hit was beyond reach!  :):)

That was quick.  Two pitches for Rolison.  I know he's not as valuable as Palencia, but with Rolison having pitched each of last two days, I wonder if Palencia having pitched only one inning in the week prior to today, whether going a second inning might not have made better sense?

It just boils down to being too cheap to sign high-velocity relievers with a track record. Going after washed-up former closers and junkballers is inherently fraught with peril.

Signing big ticket relievers is kind of Damned if you do, damned if you don’t proposition.

Biggest ticket free agent relief signings over last three free agent cycles. Lots of disappointments here:

Josh Hader-Tanner Scott-Edwin Diaz-Devin Williams-Robert Suarez-Tyler Rogers-Jeff Hoffman.

Jays not using Hoffman or Rogers to close but minimum salary Louis Varland instead, Hader and Diaz are hurt, Devin Williams mostly a bust, Tanner Scott a bust. Suarez good so far but not closing.

Some Hoyer bullpen decisions poor; some good. Kind of mystified why didn’t bring back Keller but passing on Pomeranz and Kittridge looks smart now. Maton has been a bust so far and that has hurt.

Cubs bullpen ERA was #5 and #6 in NL last two seasons. Not bad.

#8 so far in 2026—middle of the pack. Maton has a lot to do with that.

Maton has good last year, while he may not work out I can't really fault him for that signing.

Pressley and Neris weren't.
