Not pitching around Caglione there is a great decision by Counsell.

Holmes 92.9 on the sinker and 93.7 on the 4-seamer, both about 1 MPH off his season averages. Hopefully he's still ramping up, this would have been his third rehab start.

Nate Pearson looked more impressive than most of the Cubs' pen.

Happ has exceeded his Ks of 2025 in 180 fewer PAs this season.

Well, he’s due for a hot streak at some point.

Ian Happ homers for a second straight day, this one a 2-run HR that puts the Cubs up 7-2 in the 6th against the Royals.

After breaking his 0-for-22 stretch, Happ has a hit in 5 of his last 6 at-bats including three extra-base hits.

A Happ hot streak would be much obliged.

Cubs up 10-2.  Nice game by bats, lots of hits, Happ and Amaya with long HR's, Busch and Bregman 3 hits each.  Boyd has been good, he looked just exhausted by end of the 7th.

Having used only Rea yesterday, only two more innings to cover today, and only two innings left to cover, the bullpen will be well rested when they come back on Tuesday.

Why use Zeferjahn in a blowout? And why is PCA DHing three times in a week?

Why use Zeferjahn in a blowout? And why is PCA DHing three times in a week?

Had he not pitched today, Zeferjahn would have had five consecutive days off before Cubs next game—and he might not be type of pitcher (not a control guy) who benefits from a long layoff.

As to PCA, it’s a long season and Cubs have played 17 days in a row. As Counsell explained:  "Pete's dealing with what a lot of the players are dealing with. He's tired and I'm trying to recharge some batteries as best I can right now.”

More on Zeferjahn and usage. CA rode him pretty hard in July and early August. He went through a 5-game stretch where he threw 20-21-10-23 and 31 pitches over the course of 10 days. He’s never thrown more than 57 innings and could be looking at a season extending into November, at least in theory. Even with a day off tomorrow using him in a blowout is extremely dubious managing. A break of several days would probably be the best thing for him.

This is why Imanaga just may not be a guy you can start in the postseason, no matter how good he can be in stretches. Scoring goes way down, every run is huge, and it's a lot harder to string hits together. Those HRs can pop up at any moment and they're killers.

Bregman!  HR, bumps leads back to 7-4.  Very nice.  Shota, 3HR's scattered over 4.2 innings.  Nice for the offense to outscore given a rough start.  Time for a bullpen night.

Jacob Webb!  Wow, Cubs win, Cubs win.  Webb has been amazing, what a an effective signing he was.  Hoyer and Hawkins, that was a good signing.  Likewise for Rollison.

Thornton with a really crucial 1-2-3 inning with 2 K's.  I saw a 97 from him.  Might be that if he gets a little more rest with the re-populated bullpen, might his stuff step up a little bit?  That would be fun.

Great job by the offense stacking up runs.
