Can Belt play corner outfield?  I know he has played a few games in LF, but I don't know if he's good enough to play there full time.  If he was, though, he'd be a good target if they moved Soriano.

First, Brandon League got that ridiculous 3 years, $22.5 million deal with the Dodgers (with incentives and options that could take it to $33.5 million).  Now, Jeremy Affeldt has signed a 3 year, $18 million deal with the Giants.  I'll say it again...Sean Marshall  left a ton of money on the table when he signed for 3 years, $16.5 million.  A three year fWAR comparison of the three pitchers:

Affeldt: 1.4 WAR; tied for 86th in MLB.
League: 2.5 WAR; tied for 40th in MLB.
Marshall: 6.7 WAR; 2nd in MLB (behind only Kimbrel).

One of the guys who is tied with League in WAR over the past three years is Joel Peralta, who just signed a 2 year, $6 million deal with the Rays.  Pretty smart shopping by Friedman, as usual.

The Marlins are apparently close to a trade that is going to send about half their team to Toronto.  The Blue Jays would get Reyes, Johnson, Buerhle, Buck, and Bonafacio for a package that includes Yundl Escobar and prospects.

If you ever need evidence that Bud Selig sucks, consider this.  Mark Cuban is so sure that Selig wouldn't let a sale go through that he doesn't even seriously bid on teams anymore.  Meanwhile, Jeffrey Loria has been allowed to own not one but TWO different teams.  And he's run both right into the ground with his cheapness.

I mean, if there was ever a trade the commissioner needed to reject because it's "in the best interests of baseball", this is it.

Nolasco is rumored to be the next to go, even though his contract is kind of an albatross at this point.  Stanton is mad at the Marlins.  Time to call up and offer Baez+ for Nolasco and Stanton, with the Cubs playing all of Nolasco's contract.  I mean, it would be insane for them to trade Stanton for just about anything...but with the Marlins, anything could happen.

If it wasn't the Marlins, I'd say unloading all of those contracts isn't a horrible idea.  They didn't go anywhere this year with those players, so if someone's willing to take them off your hands, it's actually probably a good thing.

Still, that team is a joke.  Ripoff the taxpayers to build you a new stadium, then start overspending wildly on free agents with all of your newfound cash (which is a strategy that never works . . . Magic Johnson and Ned Colletti should take a lesson), and a year later you're dumping everyone again. 

A damn shame the Cubs lost to these clowns in 2003.
