Must admit I was annoyed by the fact that noone made the Hall today.  If I were HOF tsar I'd make the following changes:

1. Top voter gets in regardless of percentage.
2. In any year, veterans committee cannot elect more players than baseball writers
3. Any writer who fails to vote for at least one player loses voting privileges.
4. Create a third category, "just missed". A "just missed" vote does not count for or against a player. Each writer can put up to 10 players total in the HOF and "just missed" categories.

Hopefully, these changes will get more live players in the HOF

Speaking more generally, most of the windbags in the media will tell you the peak of steroid usage was late 90's - early 2000's. Most will suggest there has been a dramatic reduction in HR rate since more rigorous testing has been implemented. The data just doesn't show that, period.

Actually...I don't really care about the home run totals. I simply didn't think the data was convincing.

What I do care about is "cheating".  I think what Barry Bonds did to Baseball is on the order of 100 times worse than anything Pete Rose ever did.

I guess I'm a militant...but if I had my way not being elected to the HOF would be forgone conclusion. Players banned from Baseball aren't eligble.

You don't care about the home run totals? If the home run totals are irrelevant, then how is what Bonds did worse than anyone else? Because the Hall is full of cheaters. Chemical cheaters, too. The whole premise of the roids-are-awful argument is the notion that they have a greater effect than other forms of cheating have had, historically. But if home run totals don't matter, then what Bonds did doesn't matter, either.

Regarding whether or not the data was convincing, I'd love to hear some sort of statistical argument to the contrary, rather than just, "I don't like the numbers." Frankly, that's pretty disappointing.

Hank Aaron and Mike Schmidt cheated when they tried amphetamines, even if it was just once or a few times.  And don't say that steroids are worse because they help more because (1) there's no proof of that, and (2) using either illegal drug shows the same lack of character--both situations involve trying the most effective available illegal substance to try to gain a competitive advantage.  As soon as BBWAA members start campaigning to remove cheaters like Aaron and Schmidt from the Hall of Fame, I'll reconsider whether or not I think Bonds should be there.

I used to think it would be fun to visit the Hall of Fame someday.  But a Hall of Fame without Bonds, Clemens, Bagwell, Biggio, and Piazza (among others) just doesn't interest me at all.  Those are the dominant players of the era of baseball I watched, and the Hall of Fame is just a farce without them.

As I posted earlier this week, the Hall of Fame lost over $2 million in 2011, and has lost money in 8 of the last 10 years.  And with this vote, they've probably ensured another money-losing year since their biggest weekend of the year will be a non-event.  That's not sustainable.  Making the Hall of Fame irrelevant to many fans under 40--fans who have disposable income and young children to introduce to the game--is just going to speed up it's decline and eventual closing.

The Hall of Fame and the BBWAA have become an embarrassment to MLB. Most of the voters were at least nominally sports "reporters" during the steroids era, but these sanctimonious voters managed (at best) to turn a blind eye to the prevalence of steroid use on the teams they covered on a daily basis, while writing glowing reports about the exploits of the users.

The Brewers have signed Kelvim Escobar.  He last pitched in the majors in 2009, and has only five innings since the end of the 2007 season. 

Gives some hope to Mark Prior and Brandon Webb, I guess.

The Mariners were about to give up Taijuan Walker, Nick Franklin, and others for Upton.

I'm not sure the Cubs are ready to give up something remotely close to that.

I don't understand the Upton talks.  Kevin Towers doesn't seem to like Upton, but he seems to be asking for unreasonable return.  It's just weird.
