sort of sad to watch the rapid declines of the greats.  You spend years hoping your team misses a guy in the rotation, but when they start proving themselves overly mortal, it just doesn't feel right.  Halladay's fastball has been 88-91 in Florida this spring.  I would think he was saving it for the regular season, but I'm not sure he was really any faster than that last year.  Doubt Philly picks up his option next year either, so he will probably be on the free agent market.

Ray, thanks.  Really nice article.  And makes a ton of sense. 

It seems a lot of these things go in swings.  One expects BABIP to be highly variable; McCracken showed that it wasn't very much; that gets simplified to assume that there is no variation; now it turns out that there is a limited amount of variation after all. 

But that's really interesting.  Popups are good, in a lot of ways.  And K-pitchers who miss bats, seems only natural that if hitters have a hard time even touching the ball at all, they'll make bad contact on a lot of other pitches.

Furcal is having Tommy John surgery, so he's out for the season for the Cardinals.  They're in pretty bad shape at shortstop, with Ronny Cedeno being their best choice.

Actually, Jason Bartlett is still out on the free agent market.  He's the type of player the Cardinals pick up off the scrap heap and end up getting a .300/.350/.425 season.

Pete Kozma will be their SS. He hit .333 last year. Probably win the batting title this year.

Given his minor league history, I think even the Cardinals won't be able to find the magic with Pete Kozma for a full season.  They used that up at the end of last season.
