Sounds like Upton is picking his new team this week.  It's between the Phillies and Braves with a possible mystery team.  Sounds like a pretty expensive signing for the Braves--considering their histories with big money free agents, you'd expect the Phillies would win a bidding war between those two.

I suspect there will be far more relatively early signings this year than normal.

If they sign before tax rates go up, they can have their contracts front loaded and avoid part of the burden of the increased tax rates.

Evan Longoria has apparently been extended through 2022.  He had signed that great team-friendly deal a few years back that took him through 2016, but now he's getting $100 million from 2017-2022 (with a 2023 team option).  Longoria is really good, but this seems a little premature.  The Rays still had four years to decide if they wanted him beyond age 30.

One thing about this Longoria extension...this adds evidence to the idea that teams just aren't going to let their elite players get to free agency nearly as often under the new CBA.  We already saw it with Cain and Hamels, and now the same thing has happened with Longoria.  I guess the Brewers did the same thing with Braun too. 

It makes me think the Cubs should at least make a competitive bid for Greinke, because he might be the last true top of the rotation pitcher in his prime who will hit the free agent market for a while.

Lots of free agent activity already today: Pettitte and Ichiro are going back to the Yankees, and Rivera is expected to have a deal by the end of the week.  Also, Ryan Madson is signing with the Angels.

It sounds like Grienke is going to get at least 6 years/$150 million.  Considering the Dodgers are getting around $260 million/ year for their cable deal, that might just be their opening offer.

JR mentioned in the Cubs in... topic that Paul Maholm should probably find a new agent.  Another guy who should be in the market is Sean Marshall...another inferior reliever just signed a better deal than Marshall got...and from the same team Marshall signed with.  Jonathan Broxton is going to be paid $21 million over the next three years, with a $9 million option for a fourth year.  I know Broxton is a "proven closer", but Marshall is just a better pitcher.

Ryan Madson signs for 1 year with the Angels.  He gets $3.5 million guaranteed, plus $2.5 million in roster bonuses (not really sure what that is--maybe bonuses for days on the roster?), plus $1 million in incentives. 

Given what relief pitching is going for so far this offseason, that is an absolute steal.  Madson must have wanted to go to the Angels or insisted on closing for a contender or something, because I can't imagine that no one offered more than that.

The Cubs should go to Soria and offer him the same contract today.

Braves and BJ Upton are close, according to MLB.com Braves beat writer Mark Bowman.  Let's see how bad a deal it is...it's going to be ugly for the Braves.

I think Bowman was the first to break the Dempster/Delgado trade.

Bob Nightengale says 5 years, $70-$75 million on the Upton deal.  Not as ugly as I expected with the Phillies involved in the bidding, but definitely more than I would've wanted to give him.  Pagan and Victorino are much better buys (and Chris Young would've been too).

Braves lineup was very lefty with Freeman, McCann, and Heyward all lefty bats (not to mention Chipper's strong side and Bourn--now gone). So, Upton balances Braves lineup a heap compared to recent seasons.

Also, keep in mind that Upton is going from an AL pitchers park to a neutral NL park. Upton's OPS+ over the last two seasons was 112, which is basically identical to Freeman and Prado in 2012.  So, that's pretty solid offense for an up-the-middle position.  A key is whether Upton's CF defense can be more consistent. He has good CF range but is a bit erratic at times.   Big defensive shoes to fill compared to Bourn.

Upton at age 22 in 2007 had an OPS+ of 136. So, there may well be some upside left in him too, as he is still only 28 and is now getting out of a bad ballpark.
