The Dodgers signed Ryu Hyun-Jin...I've seen 6 years, $36 million.  How many starters do they have now?  You know, for as big as their payroll is, they don't have too many sure thing great players on that roster.  There are lots of expensive guys with warts.

The Indians signed Mark Reynolds, 1 year, $6 million.

How about a 6 or 7 man rotation, with everyone throwing an inning or two in relief in a predetermined game about halfway between their starts?

Might be an effective way to keep them fresh and avoid anyone being worn down when playoffs arrive.

The Royals sound like they're intending to put Wade Davis in the starting rotation.  That might help make this a better trade for them if he can make that transition and retain some of the stuff he flashed as a reliever last season.

Wow, I was hoping we'd see some kind of Garza-Myers centric trade at some point since it seemed like they wanted to move him for pitching, but it seems like they gave up a lot.  Maybe Myers has some kind of underlying problem no one knows about?

I prefer what the Rays received, no doubt. That said, not sure I quite agree with the complete lambasting this deal is getting.

Montgomery and Leonard are lottery tickets. Sucks to say that about Montgomery, given his pedigree, but it's true at this point. Without knowing who the PTBNL is and cash that's exchanging hands, it's hard to make heads or tails of the crumbs of this deal.

Looking at the headliners, then, Myers and Odorizzi for Shields and Davis. Myers is obviously one of the best position prospects in the minors. That said, as with any prospect, he is not without question marks. Should he fetch more than 2 years of Shields? Probably. That is in part balanced by the swap of Odorizzi for Davis, though both have significant control issues. Not a trade I would have made in the end, but I've seen a lot worse, I think.

On a pure talent basis, the deal might not be that bad.  But the thing that makes it bad to me is that they traded one of the top 5 prospects in baseball in a move that doesn't put them over the top.  Shields is really good, and that team should be somewhat competitive in that weak division...but the rotation behind Shields is still made up of a bunch of back end guys.  And the offense that was 12th in the AL in runs scored last year hasn't been touched.  It's still going to take some luck and player development for them to finish ahead of the Tigers.

So essentially, they've given up their best prospect for a strong #2 starter who makes them a contender, but not the favorite in their division.  Depending on what the White Sox do for the rest of the offseason, the Royals might not even be the favorite to finish second in that division.  More often than not, that type of deal is just awful for the team that gives up the prospect.

I'm not sure I disagree with a lot of what he's saying.  While Myers is a top prospect, his strikeouts aren't a nontrivial issue and might limit his upside.  Odorizzi is also more of a future #3 or #4 starter, and Wade Davis may actually have more upside than him.  Honestly, it's not that hard to see where the Royals might wind up coming out ahead on this, although giving up Myers and other good prospects is pretty tough to swallow.

I guess Kansas City was just tired of being irrelevant and felt like they needed to do something.

Myers was originally drafted as a catcher, and my understanding is, he still may have some skills and value there.  Often overlooked in the scheme of things.  If he can return to that position, his upside improves.

Either way, I still feel sorry for KC fans.  They suck so bad that they always get top draft picks, but then have to give most of them up to FA or trade and watch them star elsewhere.
