I prefer what the Rays received, no doubt. That said, not sure I quite agree with the complete lambasting this deal is getting.
Montgomery and Leonard are lottery tickets. Sucks to say that about Montgomery, given his pedigree, but it's true at this point. Without knowing who the PTBNL is and cash that's exchanging hands, it's hard to make heads or tails of the crumbs of this deal.
Looking at the headliners, then, Myers and Odorizzi for Shields and Davis. Myers is obviously one of the best position prospects in the minors. That said, as with any prospect, he is not without question marks. Should he fetch more than 2 years of Shields? Probably. That is in part balanced by the swap of Odorizzi for Davis, though both have significant control issues. Not a trade I would have made in the end, but I've seen a lot worse, I think.
