Lots of rumors this afternoon that the Braves have an offer out on Upton that is strong.  If they picked up Upton, the race between the Nationals and Braves could be pretty good in 2013.

So in his case the question is really simply is he good enough to be worth what he will cost in a true FA market, and would he be good enough to either move Castro off SS or would he be good enough at 2B or 3B to move himself?

The Yankees have old or frail starters at SS and 3B, so they would presumably be interested, and so would the Red Sox, so the two of them could easily be aggressively bidding against each other.  I wonder if the large number of other Cuban signees in the Cub system might cause him to give a bit of a discount to the Cubs?

That's my understanding as well.

ETA: So the Dodgers will probably throw a billion dollars at him.

Gammons tweets that he's heard it might be Delgado, Gilmartin, and Spruill.  Either way, seems like pretty weak return.  Teheran and Delgado have both seen their value drop a lot in the last year, Ahmed is a low level SS who hasn't hit all that much, Gattis is a 26 year old who hasn't played above AA, and Gilmartin and Spruill are probably future back end guys.  Towers is going to come out looking pretty awful in this deal if it happens.

I really don't understand the D'Backs insistence on peddling Upton.  Is this guy a clubhouse cancer or something?  Are there injury issues?  It seems like they are going through a lot to dump the guy.  Yes, it appears that they will get quality prospects in return, but prospects are still suspects and may never achieve Upton's ceiling.

The Diamondbacks apparently perceive him as lazy and unwilling to work hard.  But there has never been any real evidence that his teammates feel that way.

Kevin Towers also *really* hates strikeouts from his hitters.  He has been purging big K guys since he took over.

Rosenthal tweets that Delgado is not the biggest piece in the deal, but Teheran is not included.  I'm not really sure what that means, because I'm not sure the Braves have another piece they'd be willing to trade that has more value than Delgado.  Maybe selling high on Minor?

Braves beat writer Mark Bowman says Prado is in the deal to Arizona, with Chris Johnson coming back.

So the final deal is Justin Upton and Chris Johnson for Prado, Delgado, Spruill, Ahmed, and Brandon Drury (a lottery ticket, low A first baseman who hasn't been good).
