First, Gomes has a lifetime OPS vs. lefties of .886 (.976 this season) and he is a natural platoon fit in LF for the Nats with Lance Nix.  Nix does not hit lefties at all, and with Morse at 1B, the only current righty platoon option in LF is Jerry Hairston. So, Gomes fills a need at a power position.

Second, Gomes projects as a Type B free agent under the most recent Elias projections, so it is possible that Nats could get a draft choice for him if they decide to arb him after the season--not likely but possible as he only earns $1.75 in 2011.

It's embarrassing that MLB still refuses to expand replay.  It looks so bush league when a call like that is allowed to stand.

It sounds like the Blue Jays are about to send Jason Frasor and a prospect to the White Sox for Edwin Jackson and Mark Teahen with the intention of then flipping Jackson (and possibly a prospect) to the Cardinals for Rasmus.

We'll have to see who the prospects are before we can fully judge the deal, obviously.  But if the Blue Jays end up with Rasmus and give up nothing more than a reliever and a decent prospect, they seem to be the big winners.
