If I recall, that special "IR designated to return" can only be used on one player. You wouldn't want to use it on Hardin and then lose someone like Forte in week 2 with a 6 week injury and not be able to bring him back.
I don't mind the IR redshirt, give them a whole season to bulk up and whatever they can learn without violating any rules.

Part of the reason Hardin was red-shirted was that he had no experience playing safety in college - he was a CB.  I guess they figured with that lack of experience and the riskiness of his injury they should just sit him out. 

We'll see what he can do this year.

I heard or read where somebody said the guy cant tackle. I hope they teach him proper tackling techniques.

I don't know about that but he tried to tackle a Redskin TE in a PS game and led with his head looking down, which is not only not very good technique but dangerous.  He probably won't make that mistake again.

I'm definitely beginning to lean towards a high speed LB. One that can get to the QB in a hurry on a blitz or one that can cover and adjust fast. Ogletree fits the bill there. Neither Briggs nor Url are spring chickens. This is a top need.

There are all different types of linebackers these days.  There are MLBs in the 4-3 and 3-4 which are somewhat similar.  And there are 3-4 OLBs which have a totally different skill set than 4-3 OLBs.  Even 4-3 SLBs and WLBs are not the same.

Typically in past drafts 4-3 LBs and guards are rarely taken in the first round.  So if you needed those players you might be able to trade down and get a quality guy a few picks later.  However, this year with the absence of quality skill offensive players that could change.

A ideal pass rush setup would include McClellin...hopefully improved after a slow start...on one side of the line and someone like Ogletree blitzing from the other side. Meet at the QB. That would mean we'd need a strong DT that can get a push up the middle, too....

Also there was talk of doing away without Peppers. Now were we to draft a sackmaster stud DE we might be able to cut bait with Peppers, saving enough cap room. Just saying to be saying.

If we cut Peppers we only get a portion of his salary restored against our cap.  It would only be something like a 50% net gain.  I don't know how exactly the math works but cutting Peppers would net us something like $6 or 7M -- nowhere near his full salary.  Which we would then have to turn right back around and sink into the position to replace him.

The biggest benefit of cutting Peppers before this season would be that his massive contract wouldn't keep tying up our cap in future years.  Which is definitely worth considering.  But in terms of helping us THIS year, IMO it would pretty much be a wash.  We'd be minus a player who is still able to play at a high level and has established himself as a leader on the D.  And God help our OL if Peppers wound up on a division rival's DL, healthy and motivated.

Peppers took plays and series off. He wasn't healthy. He wore a knee brace. Is he healthy this year? That's a mighty big two letter word "IF". I am not sure he is worth the ga&mble. IMHO Peppers, like Urlacher is on his last leg, no pun intended.
