The Padres (or theoretically Dodgers) are the ones to scoreboard watch. We have a big enough cushion on everybody else that barring a total collapse we should be able to finish ahead of them.

Cubs also have a real soft schedule. But, San Diego's the one team with an easier one the rest of the way.

Agree.  Playoff entry is pretty safe.  It would take a pretty epic collapse to lose a 10-game lead at this point.  And I don't think the Reds, DBacks, Giants, and Cardinals are really good enough to go on a 20-6 run to end the season. 

But yeah, hosting the wildcard would be really fun.  Just 1- and 2-game leads on Dodgers and Padres.  Cubs have been kinda .500-ish for the last three months.  Will probably need to be variably better than that in the remaining games to hold that #4 spot.  Helpful that we don't need to stay ahead of both of them, just one.  So *IF* the Cubs win fairly often, it's not likely that both of those teams will get crazy hot at the same time.

Padres lost.  3 games back.  I think we split with them, not sure how the tie-breaker works?

1. Head-to-head record: The team with the better head-to-head record against the other tied team(s) wins the tiebreaker.

2. Intradivision record: If the head-to-head record is tied, the team with the better record within its own division (against other teams in the same division) wins.

3. Interdivision record: If the intradivision record is also tied, the team with the better record against teams outside its division but within its league (American League for AL teams, National League for NL teams) wins.

4. Record in last half of intraleague games: If the interdivision record is tied, the tie is broken by looking at the teams' records in the last 81 games played against teams within their league.

At the moment, Cubs and Padres are both 24-18 within their division(s).

Aside: it is ridiculous that we (and the Padres) have only played 42 intra-divisional games this late into the season.  There are way too many interleague games these days.

Thanks.  Not likely to win tiebreaker, if it comes to that.  They've got 7 games left with Rockies, 3 D-Backs. 
-We've got 3 games with Pirates, 7 with Reds/Cardinals. 

So, looks like Cubs will want to stay ahead if they want #4 seed.

Both Padres and Dodgers lost.  Poor Darvish, has a 5.75 ERA this season.  He's 39 now, but Padres have him under 3 more guaranteed seasons.  Yikes.

FWIW his peripherals say he's been very unlucky. Home runs are what's killing him but even allowing for that his FIP, xFIP, and xERA are much lower.
