Kurt Suzuki was born in the states, but I wondered at the time if getting named Angels manager wasn't part of a strategy to attract some Oriental players of their own.

ESPN reports  that Hal Steinbrenner today “challenged the notion that the Yankees made a profit in 2025, suggesting that they lost money after Forbes reported the franchise generated over $700 million in revenue this year.”

Forbes most recently had Yankees yearly revenues $144 M more than Cubs and Yankees payroll (including tax) $149 M more than Cubs.

Seems to square with Ricketts assertions that Cubs basically “break even,” no?

How about that?

Heh heh, reb, with poor Steinbrenner losing money like, the conclusion is obvious:  He won't have the cash to bid on either Tucker or Imai!  :):). They'll just be free for the Cubs to bid.  If Imai won't have Dodgers or Yankees, why not us?  :):)

per Cotts, Yankees are currently ~$278, with *lots* of roster spots to fill.  So they'll be under both 3-repeat tax plus the max surcharge. 
-Imagine Cubs willing to go $35 AAV Tucker and $25 Imai. 
-To make comparable offer, Yankees will need to be willing to commit >$70 Tucker and >$50 Imai. 

But yeah, it would be fun if Steinbrenner does try to contain payroll a little, and doesn't go totally crazy on guys Cubs want.

That's higher than any of the three predictor sites anticipated that I look at (ESPN, traderumors, Athletic). 

Guessing that many of their predictions will be lower than actual.

I wouldn't assume this in any way reflects on Toronto's intentions regarding their own or other FAs. They're behaving like a big-market team trying to win, doing what those franchises do.

I hope the next CBA does something about deferred money.  It's not realistic - nor wise - to ban it, but I would like to see the deferred money hit the CBT number in the year(s) it's actually paid.

Jeff, can you explain that a little more?  For hypothetical, imagine $70 of Cease's $210 is deferred, in $10M payments over years 8-14. 

Are you arguing that they should get $10M lux hits in 2033-2039? 

Or are you arguing that they should get luxed at $30 AAV during the 2026-2032 seasons?  Rather than having the "Imputed Loan Interest Rate" which calculates that the deferred payments aren't actually worth $10/year in today's money, so it reduces the lux hit during the 7 years?

One way you could do it would be to take any contract that includes deferments and say it's going to be automatically counted as AAV in today's dollars. i.e Cease's deal would be $30 million per for CBT purposes no matter how it was spread out.

Of course there's no guarantee the CBT will be a thing after 2026.

Agree, deeg.  That could make more sense to me.  Keep teams from deferring to cheat the lux tax. 

It's written into the CBA, though.  So players won't want any revision like that.
