Jed Hoyer is one of the worst POBO/GMs in MLB. The 2025 Wild Card series win is going to go down in history as the highlight of his career.

I think there's a pretty good chance that the opening day pitching roster is stronger in 2026 vs 2025.

Opening day pitching roster will surely be better than the 5/5/25 roster, by which point Steele, Shota, and Assad were off.

Lineup should be worse, or perceived so. 

-Actual Tucker was liability the last half, obviously.  But April Tucker certainly was better than Caissie/Alcantara/Moises will be. 

-Shaw was perceived as a hot prospect who had always hit.  He didn't, much.  Actual 2026 Shaw might end up as good or better than 2025 Shaw; but perceived expectations are much lower.

Dumb Q: 
1.  If a guy gets traded, with a bunch of deferred $$ in his deal, does the receiving team take on all of the deferred responsibility? 

2.  Or is there freedom to negotiate how remaining costs get divided between sending and receiving team? 

3.  Regardless of deferred, is there always freedom for the sending team to take on some of the salary for a traded player?  Or if the receiving team doesn't want full cost responsibility, you either can't make the trade; or you need to send your own bad contract in exchange; or you need to receive some offsetting value to make up for the bad contract, whether that be prospect or international money or whatever? 

These Q's popped into mindb with Cubs having wanted Tanner Scott last year, Scott having failed, and Dodgers now signing a much better closer.  Like, might Hoyer still like Scott and think Hottovy can fix him.  But now trade for him at no talent expense; with 1 year of commitment gone so the remaining contract seems shorter to Jed; and maybe have Dodgers take on some of the cost?

I'd assume Cubs say no.  After Scott's lousy 2025, picking up 3 years at $16+ AAV is too much.  Dodgers would need to give some value to be able to offload the remainder of his deal.

The obligation to pay the deferred money is determined by the parties to the trade.

Obviously, that matter would be a key component to trade negotiations.

For example, in the Radael Devers trade from Red Sox to Giants, the Giants agreed to take on all the deferred money. See link below.

If Dodgers and Cubs wanted to discuss a Tanner Scott trade, they can negotiate whatever they can agree upon. My guess is that Dodgers would be happy to unload Scott and would pay bulk of what is owed to him, including deferrals, for a relatively modest trade cost.

By the way, according to AZ Phil, Cubs did not place Ed Howard on the Cubs AAA off-season roster. That means he can be taken in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft on Wednesday. No strings attached. Ditto for the 2nd and 3rd rounders of that 2020 draft:  Carraway and Nogwu.
