Don't love quick-hooking Peterson there with the bullpen in the state it's in.

Can someone find stats on how often Counsell pulls starters in the 6th?

Nice win.  Nice work by bullpen.  Scoring 4 runs after first two guys were outs, that's pretty great.

Even with the bullpen, this is what he has to do with the starting pitchers he currently has. They're all 4th/5th starters. If you get 5 good innings from them, you take it and hope the bullpen can hold the lead.

If Hoyer went out of his comfort zone and traded for Skubal (obviously not happening) or Ryan (almost as obviously not happening), Counsell would let them go 7+ innings every time. But he has the pitchers he has, so he has to manage this way.

A few of us have noticed that no matter who is on the mound, this whole season Counsell begins pacing as soon as the 6th opens like his bladder is about to burst, and then, at the first sign of trouble, he almost sprints to the mound.  And 40% of the time relief gives something up.  Just sayin'

The MLB leader (qualified) in average innings per start is Yamamoto at 6.55 per start.

Only about 10 SP average even 6 innings per start.

Nobody is going to be pitching 7+ innings on a regular basis. Nobody is doing that in MLB these days. Nothing to do with quality of anybody’s bullpen.

Bregman not only can't hit, his failure to run out a grounder that was bobbled just cost the Cubs a great chance to actually get a run.

"Protection" is a debatable issue, but I seem to notice that the batters in the lineup immediately ahead of him have none.

Not sure how they won, not sure they deserved to, but they somehow did.

I think.

Those were two crazy non-challenges.  Seiya didn't take one on bases-loaded 2-0 pitch (I think), that was decidedly inside.  Fortunately instead of walking he got a 2-run hit, the extra run won the game.  Kelly not challenging on a force-in-a-run walk, when it actually was a strike, that was kinda crazy too.  Oh well.  Wicks!

Heh heh, Jeff has long noted that lots of games are won by bad players.  Bryce and Wicks the stars of the game?

I wasn't watching, more checking game day periodically.  But didn't Bryce pitch out of 1st-and-3rd one out one inning, then 3rd-no-outs the next?  Then Wicks getting out of bases-loaded no outs to save it.  Crazy.
