One thing on the Cubs spending more on the draft this year. We might be spending more, but at least on the players signed thus far, I really don't get the impression that we're getting a lot more talent than usual.
Guys like Gretzky and Schlecht were picked in the 7th or 9th rounds, because well, they weren't considered Top 5 round talents, even though they're getting paid like it. Vogelbach is getting a first round signing bonus, even though he was drafted just about where most teams thought he should go and maybe slightly above it. DeVoss was legitimately picked in the third round, but he was able to leverage an extra $150-$200K above slot out of the Cubs. Just honestly, it sounds like the other $200K+ signing bonus players are relatively of the same caliber as our $100-$150K bonus players the last couple of years.
I just get the feeling a lot of this money is being thrown around mostly because we have it to throw around and the agents know we have it and can bump what would normally be a $150K bonus into $225K and higher bonuses, instead of us signing players with more talent than usual.
