In terms of talent, that's a good price for Santana.  But I'm not sure I'd want to take on his full $12 million.  I mean, if you're paying him that much, then you probably have to bargain shop for the other starter or two the Cubs are sure to sign.  And I think getting two mid-range guys off the free agent market (maybe Marcum and Liriano, for example) is preferable to getting Santana and someone like Correia or Francis.

Haren is what, $15 next year?  Or is it $13 next year?  I'm not sure how likely it is that he'll become a great bargain pickup at that price.  But I do see the value. 

If he has an excellent year, you can pay him $10 or so and then trade him ala Dempster.

I was interested in Haren as well, but looking at how much he's lost on his arm, it's hard to see him making a comeback.  He mostly pitched in the upper 80's with his fastball last year and has been in a decline for a while.

I'd agree, except that he had pretty much maintained performance despite the loss in velocity until this year.  And this year, he pitched through a back injury for several months--so I think there's at least some hope that he can rebound to 2011 form if healthy.

But even if he doesn't rebound, the Cubs haven't really lost much.  He was still fine as a back end starter in 2012...and if he does that again, the Cubs can probably trade him at the deadline for as much as they'd give up for him now.  I just think there's too much upside there to pass him up and sign someone like Liriano instead, who may or may not be any safer but definitely doesn't have the upside.

Mike Redmond has been hired to manage the Marlins.  He can't have much managerial/coaching experience, can he?  I mean, he hasn't been retired more than a couple of years.

The list is already dated--Casilla has already been DFA'd and picked up by the Orioles, and Mark Reynolds' contract option was not picked up (though the Orioles do still control him, I think).  On that list, Callaspo seems like he'd be the most likely to get a call from the Cubs.  His career slash line of .275/.335/.384 would probably get a little boost at Wrigley, and he's a good defensive third baseman.  Not sure I'd be excited about it, but he's probably likely to be better than most of the third base options out there (including Stewart and Valbuena).

And if the 2013 Cubs were a team being constructed to have a chance of winning, that kind of anti-awful approach might make a great deal of sense.  But that is not the goal for 2013, and if the Cubs find someone they believe has more serious upside potential to allow them to create value, I suspect they are much more likely to go in that direction.

Can't imagine the Cubs could put together a trade without at least one of Baez, Castro, Rizzo, or maybe Samardzija.  But it would be nice if they'd try.

It's not surprising, as Belt has significant upside, but the Giants have been hesitant to commit to him full-time. Perhaps some team can pry him away from San Francisco if the Giants believe he won't reach his ceiling, but it doesn't seem particularly likely.
