I'd be willing to trade Castro for Stanton, but I wouldn't do tico's deal.  I wouldn't give them those choices.  We'll give you Castro for Stanton and Nolasco.   Period.  Okay, I'd be willing to throw in Coleman.

If Baez is included in our hypothetical fantasyland trade or you don't count him as a SS long term, we really aren't that stacked at SS in the minors.  Alcantara and Marco Hernandez are pretty decent prospects.  Still, neither is a blue chipper either, and they're both a long way from the majors.  Not to knock either of them, but at this stage, we're pretty lucky if one of those guys turns into an average regular. 

Other than those two, really I'm not even sure where our depth is all that great at SS.  Timothy Saunders is still a 30th-plus round draft choice.  Guys like Junior Lake, Logan Watkins and Gioskar Amaya are stretched at shortstop.  Penalver and Lockhart are still in rookie ball. 

There's some decent depth there, but no big time prospects either.  There might be a halfway decent chance of a regular major league shortstop coming out of this group down the road, but having a bunch of B- or C grade prospects at a position is pretty far from a guarantee you'll get even one good major league player.

br, I actually agree with the bird in the hand idea, which is why I'm sold on Stanton. Castro is a league average bat at SS. Lots of value there. Stanton is already one of the top 10 players in the game, and he's only 23. He's the star we're hoping Castro could develop into. Stanton is a bird in the hand superstar. Castro is not.

Regarding the question of how stacked we are at SS, part of my trade idea includes them sending Hechavarria our way if they select Castro. Hechavarria's bat is questionable at best, but his glove is very, very good. You can live with that for a couple of development years while our young SS's climb the ladder. We're not going to be terribly competitive in 2013, and 2014 is a long shot, at best.

Finally, regarding Baez's defense, it is my impression that scouts no longer question his ability to stick at SS. Some say he could be even better than Castro. I don't think Baez pushes Castro in our organization, but at this point, if Castro were to be traded in such a headliner deal, I'd be very comfortable counting on Baez to remain at short.

I still don't know if I have a good feel for Baez's potential at short.  If his future comp is Gary Sheffield, for instance, he was only a major league shortstop for two years before moving over to 3B. 

Scouts might be rethinking his potential at short, but I guess my gut still says he's not going to be a 10-12 year starting major league shortstop. My guess is if Baez does have some major league shortstop potential, he's probably only going to be playing it for 2-4 years or something like that before moving over to corner outfield or 3B, like with Sheffield. 

We still have a couple of years to go at least before figuring out his future position anyway.

The Marlins are now saying they won't be trading Nolasco this offseason.  That team just makes no sense.
