John Smoltz made an observation last night about pitching.  Cubs have had 39 pitchers this year.  MLB average is about 30.  30 teams that's 900 pitchers.  Smoltz said that's unsustainable.  Current strategy is akin to human sacrifice.  Are his statistics correct?

He also said that MLB needs to fix the position player pitch rule.   I agree.  First of all, unless it's a novelty thing, I don't pay to watch eephus pitching.  Secondly, it makes some hitting statistics bogus.  Thirdly, some managers are using the rule to rest their pens.  Last Monday night when Murphy started using position players in the 7th, it resulted in a rested pen for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  I may have these numbers wrong but announcers said that 247 position players have pitched this year compared to 24 in 2024.  Really? 

Pitchers and their livelihoods are being abused.

The Cubs also haven't had a starter go beyond seven innings yet this year.  Until just a few years ago, the Cubs had never finished a season without a complete game, and until the 2000s, no team ever had.

I don't know what to think about the position players pitching.  I used to love it because it was so unusual and weird and everybody had fun with it.  Somehow seeing it before the last inning feels like more of a mockery; maybe the existing rules (it already has to be a blowout if it's not extra innings) could be tweaked so that the lead has to be bigger and it has to be the bottom of the 8th or later.

And the Japanese media is finally learning that there are major league players other than The Protagonist.  The Japanese news channel Fuji devoted a full segment to Imanaga and his good outing the other day, and today they even mentioned Okamoto in Toronto and Kikuchi in Anaheim, whom they had almost completely forgotten.

In the latest episode of the Ump Show, Doug Eddings decides to demand that a Cardinals rookie relief pitcher straighten his hat, and manager Oli Marmol comes out to argue, and Eddings calls a pitch clock violation because he's arguing after being tossed.  Then he makes a terrible call to seemingly gift the Rockies a run in retaliation.

Now the whole Cardinals team is wearing their hats crooked in solidarity.  I can't see why Eddings had to do this; plenty of other players have worn their hats like this, including Pedro Strop and Fernando Rodney for us.  And to a rookie in what I think was his first game.

Not only many (not all) of the Cardinals but some Rockies players wore their caps sideways in support as well. Just a total dick move by Eddings, who apparently said "That kid isn't wearing his hat that way on my field".

Pete Crow-Armstrong has faced 28 teams and 286 pitchers in 22 stadiums so far this season, which isn't over yet.

Joe DiMaggio faced 7 teams and 321 pitchers in 9 stadiums in his entire (regular season) career, which spanned 13 seasons between 1936-1951.

It's a different sport now.

Rays DFA Hunter Bigge. They're better at this pitcher thing so you'd be inclined to trust their judgment on this, but would be no surprise if the Cubs had interest. Bigge is down 1 MPH this season but still throws hard, issues come down to walks pretty much (both in MLB and AAA).
