reb, I've got Kevin Alcantara for RH OF spot.  He's out of options, no?  Maybe he'll get traded, I know you've kind of been anticipating that.  But until/unless, he's the guy.  I kinda worry that he won't hit enough to be useful, but maybe he'll hit enough to be a good fit?

Alcantara had .984-OPS vs LHP at Iowa.  That's pretty strong.  So maybe if limited to LHP matchups, perhaps he'll actually hit pretty well, and be ready to be a capable mlb platoon-oriented guy?  He's also young enough that perhaps he's just ready to take a developmental improvement step?  Plus he played through a sports hernia last year, so maybe some of his productivity was limited by that, and if he's healthier that will also help him improve?

What he could provide, in the hypothetical that he hits enough and isn't an auto-out liability:
-PCA injury contingency in CF;
-Seiya-injury contingency in RF (vs LHP)
-PCA rest against some tough lefties
-Busch some rest against tough lefties, both Austin + Alcantra could play?
-If he hits well enough to be useful vs LHP, perhaps Seiya could sometimes DH against LHP, and let Kevin play RF and give Seiya a little rest from fielding?

Also possible that Alcantara might compete with Austin for some DH AB.  I wouldn't expect Kevin to hit well enough to be the RH DH versus lefties, I'd expect that to be Austin.  But if austin struggles and Kevin hits pretty well, maybe he'll just hit his way past Austin?

Back to the question whether Jed values character and what how players view the organization. It certainly seems based on who he signs is that he does and that comments from players seem positive.  I do wonder given that the Cubs will not likely extend any of their home grown players at year six ((except for a couple of years beyond) that has to be a negative for the players.  ....

I wonder if the upcoming expirings will be a little easier to extend?  Bryant and Baez, they emerged as superstars early, and always expected superstar deals; but neither really was worth superstar contract to the cubs when their time came.  Happ, Hoerner, Suzuki, those three guys are not the same types of guys, or in the same types of age.  Hoerner is really good, but not sure that he's going to command a superstar deal, with superstar length?  Happ certainly will not.  So, maybe those guys will be a little easier to extend?

I'd like to think that Hoerner and Suzuki will be worth extending, and will do so on deals that aren't extreme.  Happ, I'm kinda nervous that his bat and power won't age well, and I'd like to hope that we'd have other younger cheaper options.  (Caissie, Alcantara, Conrad....).

But yeah, it would be really lame if for a guy like Hoerner they just let him walk.

On the quality of conditions and the Cubs care and support for families, etc., I wonder if players don't realize how good they've got it until after they leave?  Sometimes you assume it will be the same everywhere, until you leave and find out it isn't....

...5-man bench (including primary DH):
1. back-up catcher
2. lefty primary DH, perhaps Caissie
3. Tyler Austin
4. righty-hitting OF/DH bat guy who is really good vs. lefties and can play OF okay
5. Utility IFer, preferably lefty bat or switch....

I've got Alcantara for spot 4.  But interesting that there doesn't really seem to be room for both Moises plus Caissie.  Part of me thinks it might be nice to have both, sharing some DH AB and kind of getting a share-time opportunity to compete for that role.  But the roster just really doesn't have space for both.  So kinda guessing that they'll compete in camp, and then maybe one will stay and other go to Iowa.  Just for time, kinda thinking Caissie should get first shot.  Plus obviously he has defensive-versatility value.  Perhaps if he struggles and Moises hits at Iowa, they could switch who's up and who's down.

Perhaps that could change *IF* Alcantara gets traded.  Then you could perhaps replace the Alcantara spot with Moises.  Life without a backup CF on big-league roster.  If PCA gets hurt at some point so that you need a CF, Iowa callup is available tomorrow.  But when PCA is fresh, he can get all the starts at least for the first month or two.  *IF* Alcantara had options, he could go down; but not the way it is.

Alcantara has an option remaining for 2026.

PCA started 153 games in 2025. Not too many games left in CF beyond that.

Sure, it’s very possible that Alcantara fills a bench spot. But I doubt it. Think Cubs will bring in a veteran righty bat for bench.

I know Austin has a 40-man spot now but think he’s more of a non-roster type competing to make club on a “make good” basis. Just don’t see any big commitment to him as a key righty bat off the bench.

Not sure what is in his contract but very possible his $1.25 is not guaranteed and could be one of those cba-required severance pay deals if released during spring training.

Ah, that completely changes my analysis, if true.  Cots says he doesn't.

Google Docs · docs.google.com

I hope you're right.  Who knows what good one more year of full-time developmental AB's at Iowa might produce?  Having the roster flexibility for a better hitter might be really useful, *IF* the guy can actually hit.

So *IF* KA can option at Iowa, they could replace him with a veteran.

An unlikely but not impossible alternative would be to replace him with Moises?  Keep both Caissie and Ballesteros as lefty hitters on roster?  At present, we don't really know how MOises and Caissie will do.  Moises might just win that DH role, whereas Caissie might be overwhelmed by big-league pitching?  Conversely, it's possible that Caissie will hit well, with HR power that Moises doesn't have.  Spring training might not be sufficient to determine how that's going to play out, so, maybe keep both?

For example, suppose there are 6 games against RHP.  Moises and Owen could each get 3 starts?  Caissie could start twice in RF, giving Seiya two DH-rest games, plus get his third start  at DH.  Moises could get the other 3 DH starts.  Each would get enough AB and opportunities to stay sharp and to keep developing.  If Caissie's power makes him obviously preferable, after a while you can shift the relative usage, obviously, or vice-versa.

That's a helpful point.

heh heh, it would be fun to have one of these guys who actually does end up hitting and being useful.

2025:  Jon Berti, Justin Turner, Gage Workman, Brujan
2024:  Garrett Cooper
2023; Luis Torrens, Eric Hosmer, Edwin Rios, Trey Mancini, Miles Mastrobuoni....

I'm just so used to Hoyer's end-of-bench fill-ins being so terrible that we just assume Austin will be about as productive and as short-lived as Cooper, Workman Berti, Torrens, Mancini, and Rios.

But it's not impossible that sometimes a guy comes over from Japan and might actually be good in his selective protect LHP-only role?

I agree that Hoerner will be easier to extend, and I will be surprised of the Cubs do not extend him, perhaps even a 6 year deal.  I doubt that they would go beyond that.  They signed Swanson to 7 years, and I think they believe that it was well worth it.
I think Suzuki also would be easy to extend, as far as money is concerned.  If he goes elsewhere, it might be because the Cubs will not guarantee him a non-DH position.

I think the Cubs would love to extend PCA to a 7 - 8 year deal.  But I doubt that his agent would advise him to sign one at this point in his career to any non-Soto like contract.

I think that Happ would love to sign a new contract, at a not unreasonable salary.  I hope the Cubs don't do it.  A sub 250 batting average, and a sub 800 OPS should not be in left field.  Left field or first base it the hiding place for slow footed sluggers that provide substantial power, and Happ substantial power is not part of Happ's game.  Left field is where you park an Alanso or a Schwarber, where power production is most useful, and defense is least harmful.  Happ's defense is great, but it does not provide enough utility to substitute for 40 home runs.

If the Cubs feel that the DH spot should be used as a resting space for regulars (something I disagree with intensely) I hope they give Ballesteros a full shot in left field.  He would be better than Moreland in just about every respect, both offensively and defensively, in my opinion.  And the Power may well develop as he gains experience.

ArizonaPhil says that alcantara has an option year in 2026.

When the Commissioner's office has a question about the rules, they contact ArizonaPhil for the correct answer.

craig - I'm a bit surprised you seem to assume that the Cubs won't have both Caissie and Ballesteros on the 25 man roster to start the season. Caissie certainly seems to be a sure thing and Counsell raved about Ballesteros' ability at the plate. It certainly seemed like he expects him to be on the team next year, but maybe I'm wrong about that.

According to AI:

"Yes, Kevin Alcantara has an extra minor league option year available for the 2026 season, thanks to early career injuries and time in rookie leagues, meaning the Cubs can still send him to the minors without him being exposed to waivers, making him likely to be on the 2026 Opening Day roster or a valuable trade chip with that flexibility."

I admit to sometimes being a bit sentimental about (some) Cubs. I miss the days when it was not unusual for a player to spend his entire  (or at least virtually entire) career with the same team. I value what seems to be Happ's very genuine pride of being and wanting to remain a Cub (as well as his obvious contributions over the years) so I hope a way can be found for him to remain a Cub for at least a couple more years (even if not a starter). Seems like he might well be open to a one or two year contract in order to remain a Cub. While Hoerner may not be as obviously attached to being a Cub, it seems to me that remaining a Cub would be his clear preference (as opposed to simply seeking the highest salary). I would be very disappointed if Hoyer does not try to extend him and succeed at doing so.

People have commented about Hoyer's lack of sentimentality and his lack of prioritizing character. I agree with the former but not the latter. I wish Hoyer were less cold blooded in his assessment of current players. But I do think he places a high value on character as it relates to the player fitting into the team and prioritizing team success rather than solely his individual achievement. Seems like there have been multiple reports over the years related to how much effort goes into understanding the personality and character of players, particularly but not solely in making draft decisions.

Thanks guys!  If both Az Phil and AI agree, the question is answered definitively!  Awesome!

Alcantara getting the extra option year, that's wonderful for roster flexibility.  More importantly, I love that for Alcantara's career development.  Perhaps one more year of Iowa AB 's will do nothing more than confirm that he doesn't have the contact skills or in-game HR-capacity to be a big-league starter.  But I love getting another year of opportunity.  It would be really good for him and the Cubs if he can improve and emerge as a good asset.  Maybe even start to bash a bunch of HR's and emerge as a HR asset?

Agree, Ron, I think Hoyer values character qualities a lot.  Nico seems 100th percentile.
