Gausman has been alternating good starts and bad ones, but beggars can't be choosers.

Here's a question - can you point to any pitcher on the staff right now and say you have confidence in them, other than Holmes and Gausman? Is there even one, starter or reliever?

Actually, pondering on that myself, while the answer is no the guy that might come closest is Civale. Who probably would have gotten the 9th today if the Brewers hadn't had two lefties coming up.

Asking that question kinda shows the wisdom of Hoyer’s moves at trade deadline, no?

So, I guess most everyone on board with those moves now.

In any case, Cubs pitching has had ups and downs throughout the season. So, depends WHEN ask that question.

A week from now, perhaps will have different answers. One or two more really good outings next from Zeferjahn will have Deeg back on board and perhaps even renewing his invitation to Zeferjahn for Deeg Fave Club membership.

Credit to Counsell for using Rolison in a very precise manner that minimizes the huge platoon disparity. Almost 1/2 of batters faced have been lefties—which is hard to accomplish with the 3-batter minimum.

Rolison has been eating up lefties: in 102 PAs vs. lefties, just one extra base hit (a double) allowed!

Oppo BA is .143 vs. lefties. Wow and wow.

Cubs up 1-0 after 2.  Opened 2nd with three straight singles, but unfortunately Bregman got picked off.

Still 1-0 after 4.  Shota's given up some hard contact, but has kept it in the yard so far.  His splitter has been doing pretty well, Marlins haven't seen it and don't seem to have adjusted yet, but his splitter is staying within tempting range sometimes.  Cubs are going to need to score some runs, Junk is pretty good and seems pretty locked in.
